A software change with physical consequences
NVIDIA announced the Jetson Orin Nano Super update on 17 December 2024, describing higher operating clocks on the existing developer kit through software. That makes a familiar hardware label an incomplete description of a running system. Two apparently identical kits can have different software, power settings and operating limits. For a project record, capture the module identity, system image and selected mode together. A photograph of the board cannot preserve those differences for the next person who rebuilds it.
Separate permission from observation
A power mode establishes an operating configuration; it does not report how the application actually behaved. NVIDIA documents nvpmodel for mode selection and tegrastats for observing frequencies and temperatures. Keep the configuration record beside a time series from the intended workload. If throughput falls later in a run, the useful question is what changed alongside it. A higher permitted clock alone cannot identify whether the application is waiting for data, losing thermal headroom or exhausting available memory.
Budget the surrounding system
Before adopting a more demanding configuration, review the supply, cooler, enclosure and any peripherals that remain connected during normal use. The development desk is a poor substitute for a closed case with a camera and storage attached. Define a representative operating condition rather than choosing a convenient short demonstration. Make the decision about mode selection at the system level: the application needs to meet its response target under the conditions in which it will actually be used.
Make the change reversible
Retain the previous image and a small repeatable task before updating the kit. After the update, confirm model loading, peripheral access, shutdown and the same task output before interpreting performance. Record the selected mode after reboot as well as during setup, since the saved intention and the running state are separate facts. The useful outcome is a configuration that another developer can restore and inspect, with enough evidence to explain why its power setting was chosen.
