Artifact management

A compiled inference engine is a release artifact

Keep the target environment and conversion recipe attached to an optimized model file.

Separate the portable model from its build

A source model, an exchange-format export and an optimized runtime engine are distinct artifacts. NVIDIA’s TensorRT support documentation places conditions on serialized-engine portability across platforms, software versions and hardware. Treat a compiled engine as the output of a defined build for a defined deployment target. Copying it to another computer is an installation attempt that needs validation, even when both computers carry similar product names. The file extension alone cannot describe the compatibility assumptions embedded in that build.

Capture the inputs to compilation

Save the source model identifier, export settings, builder version, target information and any custom components used during conversion. Include dynamic input constraints and precision choices where they apply. This is enough context to investigate a rejected load or changed output without rebuilding from memory. Keep the original model available under its own identity. If the optimized artifact is damaged or incompatible after an update, the recovery path should not depend on finding an unnamed export in a developer’s downloads folder.

Validate beyond deserialization

Loading an engine demonstrates one necessary capability. Follow it with the retained task inputs and output checks, including the input shapes the application promises to accept. Separate compilation time from normal request execution when reporting performance. A cached artifact can make restart behaviour different from a first build, so identify which lifecycle stage a measurement covers. The release decision should include correctness, startup and normal operation on the target system instead of treating a successful file load as complete acceptance.

Invalidate caches deliberately

Define when an engine must be rebuilt and how a candidate replaces the active version. Use identifiers that connect a compiled artifact to its recipe and target, rather than a filename such as final.engine. Preserve the previous accepted bundle until the replacement passes the device’s checks. When software changes, consult the documentation for the installed version and compatibility mode. A clear rebuild policy makes optimized artifacts maintainable without promising that every engine will travel unchanged across an expanding fleet.
