Define the information the task needs
A document assistant does not automatically improve because every available page is sent with each request. Start with the question the application must answer and identify the material needed to answer it. Separate source selection from model execution in the design. Keep the selected passages available to the caller so a response can be assessed against its inputs. This gives a context policy a product purpose instead of making it a contest to reach the largest permitted token count.
Budget the whole request
Account for instructions, conversation history, selected documents and the output allowance using the deployed tokenizer. A text-length estimate in characters is not a dependable substitute for that accounting. Hugging Face’s cache documentation explains why longer generation contexts can consume substantial memory. Keep the accepted request boundary below the point where normal operation becomes unreliable, and make that boundary visible to the application. A successful model load cannot establish how much document content a later request may safely include.
Choose a visible overflow rule
Decide whether the service rejects an oversized request, selects fewer passages or asks the caller to narrow the question. Silent truncation can remove the evidence that makes an answer meaningful. If conversation history is shortened, preserve the information the task depends on and test the resulting behaviour. A local device benefits from a predictable limit when it avoids accepting work that will fail after a long wait. The rule should be understandable before the caller invests time in a request.
Check boundaries with difficult questions
Retain examples that require information near the selection limit, questions with conflicting passages and requests whose answer is absent. Inspect both the selected inputs and the generated output. The purpose is to evaluate the application’s information policy, not to infer general model intelligence from a few demonstrations. Revisit the policy when the model, tokenizer or cache settings change. A smaller accepted context with clear source selection can be a more maintainable design than a larger limit whose failure behaviour remains undefined.
